Nintendo Power Will Soon Be Shutting Down *UPDATED*

It’s another sad day indeed in the video game magazine world, in that it’s been confirmed that Nintendo Power will soon be publishing its final issue.

Nintendo Power has been one of the longest-running video game magazines in the country. It started out as a bi-monthly publication in the summer of 1988, and became monthly in 1990 through 2007. At this point, the publication took on a more independent angle when it was bought by Future Publishing.

According to Ars Technica, Nintendo was described as “difficult to work with”, and declined to renew the contract with Future Publishing, implement initiatives that would support the longevity of the publication, or even show interest in taking back over the magazine.

Magazines have been taking a big hit in the U.S., showing a 10 percent decrease in the first half of 2012. Not too long ago, GamePro also got axed after 23 years of circulation. There’s no info on how many more issues of Nintendo Power are planned to be released, and its staffers are currently transitioning to other publications, such as GamesRadar and MacLife magazine.

Nothing ever really lasts forever, but unfortunately, it doesn’t make it much easier when one of gaming’s most popular magazines gets put to rest.

*UPDATE*    Nintendo has confirmed that the December issue of Nintendo Power will be its last, and directs you to nintendopower.com/customerservice for any subscription questions you may have. It looks like 2013 will open with one less gaming magazine in the world. Sadness.
