Clik here to view. It’s a sad time in the world of video game print media as GamePro, one of the industry’s longest standing and well-respected publications, will be closing down for good on December 5th. Level Up reported back in July that Gamepro changed plans to go to a quarterly publication starting November 8 with the aim of upping the editorial quality and adding more content, but the idea was short-lived and Gamepro’s 22-year reign will finally be coming to an end.
GamePro’s parent company, IDG stated that there simply wasn’t enough funding to keep the publication alive. GamePro’s website, which has been up for 13 years, will become part of the PCWorld, and a large part of the GamePro U.S. staff will be laid off.
The few remaining employees, including president Marci Yamaguchi Hughes will move on to GamePro Custom Solutions to create custom content for vendors and events, according to IndustryGamers.
While GamePro’s international operations in Spain, France and Germany will continue to run, there’s no way to tell what the future holds for these employees. Regardless, IDG will retain ownership of the GamePro brand.
GamePro was the very first gaming magazine I read as a kid. I used to walk three blocks down to a corner Circle K almost daily. I would sit on the floor by the magazine rack for hours flipping through the glossy pages while gazing at the pictures, reading the game reviews, previews, news and gaming tips. The magazine solidified my desire to not only play video games, but to write about them. Farewell, GamePro, you will be missed and thank you.
